Yorktown Orchestra Syllabus 2011-2012

I. Class Participation: 30%
When students follow the class guidelines, participate fully and practice consistently they will receive a daily letter grade of B+. Students who attend class without necessary equipment, such as instruments and music as required, cannot participate fully and will receive a substantially lower grade.
II. Quizzes and Tests: 20%
There will be at least 10 performance quizzes during the year. There will be at least 3 performance tests, graded on a pass/fail basis.
III. Performances and Concerts: 40%
Public performances are required, as they are a direct outgrowth of rehearsal time and classroom instruction. The concert schedule is published as part of this syllabus. Concert absences may be considered excused for emergencies, previously notified religious observance, and some other extenuating circumstances. The average of the performances for the marking period will count for 40% of the grade. Unexcused absences will count as an E=0%. Attended performances will count as an A or B.
It is required that Orchestra members participate in one of the following per year: Arlington Youth Symphony, VBODA Senior Regional Orchestra, VBODA District XII String Orchestra or VBODA Solo and Ensemble Festival.
IV. Project: 10%
There will be a 2500 word project on an approved subject related to orchestral music or the student’s principal instrument. A guidance and information sheet will be available at least one month before the project due date.
